About Us

Tien Shan Mountains - Birthplace of Tien Shan Pai Kung Fu

From Grandmaster to Master - Body Balance was founded in 1986 by Master Pat Hancock-65th generation Tien Shan Pai. Offering world-class traditional chinese internal and external martial arts: Tai Chi, Meditation, Kung Fu, and Hsing I. Master Pat Hancock is a world-ranked master instructor with over 40 years experience.

Pat Hancock's teaching style is unique in the world of martial arts. Every student receives instruction tailored to their learning style in a relaxed & engaging setting. His skills, intuition, humor, endless curiosity along with over 40 years of experience makes the many benefits of martial arts accessible to everyone. Pat is a natural-born teacher and continues to share his ever expanding wisdom with his students. Each and every student receives the training they seek to achieve their individual goals: whether to compete at the World level or increase their physical & mental fitness. Pat is a proud Grandmaster to two of his student's schools: his daughter Eileen, owner of Body Balance Academy of Grass Valley, CA and his son Nicholas, owner of Balance and Harmony of Canby, OR.

Tai Chi

Tai Chi's graceful forms incorporate deep breathing, relaxation and a full range of movement to release blocked energy and allow Chi to flow naturally again. This supports the body to heal and develop strength, vitality, calm and clarity.  Tai Chi is an ideal lifelong meditative exercise that is accessible for all levels of ability.

At Body Balance you will receive individual instruction while learning at your own pace. The class begins with a group warmup of gentle movements and then the group begins the practice of the Tai Chi form together. Students step out when they have performed the moves they have learned to receive further instruction.

Different stories have been handed down about the origins of Tai Chi. One version holds that it was developed by monks to protect themselves against bandits. In another story meditating monks were inspired by the movements of animals as they attacked and defended themselves. Some of the names-grasp sparrow's tail, white stork spreads wings, snake creeps down-seem to bear this out.

I thought Tai Chi wouldn't be a workout compared to the gym. Now my balance is improved and muscles are stronger. Exercise use to be hard work, even stressful; now it's quiet and meditative with a focus on breathing that makes movement easy.

I found great peace and enjoyment in the study of Tai Chi under Master Hancock, and was very pleased at the gradual gains in strength, flexibility and balance I has improved my ability to face stress in life, in my relationships, and even when I am stuck in traffic.

In just one session with Pat I noticed significant relief in pain in my knees, hips, legs and lower back. The more I practiced Tai Chi the stronger my body felt, the less pain I was in, and the more I noticed a greater sense of centeredness within myself throughout my day.

Kung Fu

Kung Fu techniques are relaxed, fluid, and explosive like a whip & utilize strategies and skills that negate the dominance of size and weight. The practice of Kung Fu develops not only cardiovascular capacity and endurance but a calm clarity in the face of adversity. The great diversity of blocking, striking and foot movements builds muscle strength and agility of both body and mind.

Your class will begin with the Tien Shan Pai Kung Fu warm-ups building your cardio capacity, flexibility, strength and technique. Your training progresses to learning Kung Fu forms which are a memorized series of fighting applications.  Some forms are two-man sets which are choreographed fighting routines where you begin to learn defending and attacking reactions.  If you choose to learn to spar you will start using these multiple fighting techniques in controlled sparring one-on-one at your pace. At the more advanced levels, weapon forms and weapon two-man sets are taught as well as Dragon, Praying Mantis, and Monkey forms to name a few.

Each student learns at their own individual pace to meet their personal goals.  Come to get fit or compete at a world-class level. Schedule your Intro today!

I grew up learning Kung Fu from Shi Fu Pat. I tell everyone that Kung Fu is what gave me the foundation for my success as professional dancer.

My sons started wrestling this year and finished undefeated against kids that have several more years of experience. It's clear that all of their Kung Fu training at Body Balance is a major factor contributing to their wrestling success.

With Shi Fu Pat's guidance and training I won the Bronze in the World Tournament.

Massage and bodywork have been a corner stone of health and well-being for millennia in cultures around the world.  Women of most non-Western cultures rarely suffer menstrual or menopause symptoms.  Men also rarely suffer benign prostate diseases.  The Maya healers and Indigenous peoples throughout time view health holistically.  Empower your self with the wisdom of the ages handed down from generation to generation.

I am a certified practitioner of the Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy® Arvigo® Advanced Pregnancy Massage, and an Arvigo® Self Care Instructor. I am also avid student of Ortho-Bionomy® for many years and a certified Tai Chi Instructor.

My Teacher Dr. Rosita Arvigo, DN, is a naprapathic physician and master herbalist who has lived and studied with traditional healers in Central America for more than 30 years. She apprenticed with the renowned Maya Healer Don Eljio Panti for 10 years until his passing in 1996 at the age of 103. Dr. Arvigo learned traditional pregnancy care from Miss Hortence Robinson, a well-known herbal midwife in Belize.

Dr. Arvigo combined her knowledge of anatomy, physiology and naprapathy (study of muscles, ligaments, connective tissues) with her extensive acquired background in traditional healing methods, and formulated the Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy®.  Dr. Arvigo established the Arvigo Institute in 2000 and trains healthcare professionals worldwide.

This class delves into the anatomy and physiology of the vital flows of chi, blood, lymph and nerves within the context of the ancient Maya healing wisdom which incorporates massage, herbs, nutrition, meditation and emotional/spiritual healing. “Patty’s teaching presence infused the course with the essence, energetic & spiritual benefits of this physical practice.  Her scope of knowledge was both broad and deep.”

“The program went above my expectations with teaching anatomy & physiology of the body in detail for someone outside a medical background.”

Patricia is a fountain of knowledge on the body and it’s connection to mind/emotions and spirit.  I felt there was so much information she could provide just with her insight.
