What types of needles are used?
NOT hypodermic! Acupuncture needles occupy the same girth as a single strand of human hair—truly whisper fine. Individually packaged, single-use, sterilized needles are used in combination with clean needle technique to prevent disease transmission. They are typically made of stainless steel, copper or gold.
Does it hurt?
Yes and no! Often you don’t feel needle insertion. When you do, one or two sensations may occur: first, when a needle touches the skin, and second, when the needle meets your qi. Both only last a few seconds, followed by a rejuvenating state of relaxation. In fact, many fall asleep during treatment and the benefits outweigh fleeting moments of discomfort. Be well hydrated, breathe with the needle, and stay receptive.
What does Western science say about acupuncture?
In 2001, the World Health Organization (WHO) conducted a review of clinical trials worldwide and identified 28 conditions that acupuncture is proven to treat effectively. Acupuncture was also proven effective for treating another 63 conditions, and the WHO called for further research on these conditions.
